| Workshops for people with disabilities |
 |
Our Linden workshops, also called Workshops for People with Disabilities, have existed since 1.10.1990. The workshop developed from a sheltered workplace.
In 1992 a workshop was created in a rural area in the deaconesses’ house in Borsdorf. Seeking more spacious and practical facilities the work then continued on the premises of a former oilcloth factory. In the fall of 2002 the workshop relocated to a new building. |
The third workshop complex is developing in Schkeuditz with new premises, intending to have finished building in November 2006 (sollte man das jetzt nicht weglassen?). Until the move, the workshop Schkeuditz is located in a transitional solution, a former child care centre.
The three workshop areas employ about 335 people with disabilities who have found work according to their personal dispositions and abilities. The different areas of occupation are as diverse as metal, wood, pottery, laundry, landscaping, janitorial services, electronics, sewing, agriculture, or paper and packing. |
Newly admitted employees complete an occupational training of one or two years, similar to an apprenticeship. During that time, the new trainees are acquainted with all the operations our workshop offers. They are introduced to the work at the machines, abilities and skills are being strengthened and developed. The aim of the occupational training being to familiarise them with the world of employment, working techniques and different materials, but also to solidify their personality, strengthen the self-esteem and the collective work experience in a group setting.
|
After finishing their area of training, our employees start working in an occupation matching their dispositions, capabilities and skills, either within the workshop or in one of the outposts in landscaping or agriculture.
The group leaders in the respective branches of work are qualified experts, master craftsmen and engineers with additional training in special needs. This is how the workshop has become an efficient partner in industry, trade and service.

In addition to the work routine, our employees can also benefit from offers as accompanying measures to the development of their entire personality. The offers range from kinesiatrics like riding, physiotherapy, sports to reading, writing and conversational groups, including a monthly day to evaluate the individual's dispositions.
We also celebrate. Carnival, Christmas and birthdays are the high points of the working routine. Each year we offer a choice of activities for the time of vacation. An „open day“ is a good opportunity for interested parties to gain insight into the work of a workshop for people with disabilities and to get a general idea of the job description of a group leader.
We would particularly like to present our two shops, the „Lindenlädchen“ in Leipzig and our farm shop in Panitzsch. In Leipzig you can purchase hand-made and functional pottery of different forms, styles and colours. In addition, we offer the opportunity to look behind the scenes of a pottery workshop. Among the pottery products other in-house products from wood and paper are sold. Our farm shop in Panitzsch offers different meat and sausage produces, poultry, rabbit, duck, goose and fresh eggs, as well as other products from our wood and pottery workshop.
Under the wider umbrella of the workshop in Leipzig, a care and support group has emerged. In this group, six disabled adults are therapeutically accompanied, supported and supervised by two special needs carers. These guests are limited in their capabilities to an extent that they are unable to meet the work demands in a workshop. But even the change from a domestic setting to the group environment of the care and support group, and experiencing the workshop gearing (sounds, smells etc.) create incitement and draw attention and curiosity. The holistic encouragement and support is imperative in this process as well as the discharge of the parents in their daily lives.
On the whole, a workshop for people with disabilities is a place where many disabled people can find a meaningful life, community and security and where the feeling of self-worth of the individual is increased. „I work in a workshop - that makes me precious!“
